The evaluation of lignite fly ash as a filler in asphaltic concrete showed that an addition of 2% Basin Electric fly ash or 2% Ottertail fly ash would significantly improve the stability and durability of a representative North Dakota bituminous mix. A 4% addition of both fly ash samples show some improvement over the 2% addition. In all tests the fly ashes performed better as a mineral filler than the 1% hydrated lime. The optimum asphalt content was determined for four separate fly ash mixes and compared to a control mix containing no fly ash as well as another containing 1% hydrated lime. Tests were also made to determine voids and resistance to water. The test data and conclusions are valid for the particular overall aggregate-filler gradation and aggregate-asphalt system.
