The object was to develop non-thrombogenic surfaces,especially membrane,to permit use on hemodialysis patient without use of heparin in circulating blood. In historical order,project investigated the following kinds of surfaces: (1) Heparin ionically bound to aminoethylcellulose groups on cellophane; (2) cellophane converted to cellulose sulfate; (3) heparin covalently bonded to polyvinyl alcohol (a) formaldehyde,acid catalyzed (b) formaldehyde glutaraldehyde,acid catalyzed (c) same,catalyzed by magnesium chloride. For surfaces of type (1),above,partial success was obtained by in vitro and in vivo tests,but experiments difficult to replicate. Presoaking heparinized aminoethylcellulose surfaces in albumin significantly improved compatibility. Surfaces of type (3) were found to be more replicatible by in vitro tests;type (3c) mechanically superior to types (3b) and (3a). In vivo tests showed platelet attraction. Benefit of albumin presoak was again demonstrated. Portions of this document are not fully legible.
