Developing a Leadership Role in Health Care Evaluation: Project Team 4 Report to the Chief Medical Director

Technological and economic forces in the health care system are increasing the need to ensure that medical practice is effective and efficient, both at the level of individual clinical procedures and with respect to total care programs. The VA's strengths in large-scale, patient-related medical research position it to evaluate research in effectiveness of health care delivery programs. A more structured approach to managing and directing medical research is required to develop an emphasis on patient care effectiveness. The report outlines the relationship of a patient care effectiveness program to present research efforts and describes steps needed to develop such an emphasis. A summary of the total project is found in The Future of the Veterans Administration in Health Care, July 1974. Three other project team reports were also published.
