A Computer Simulation of Broadband Cable Distribution Systems

A substantial increase in consumer demand for services provided by cable television (CATV) systems has been found. Telecommunication services over a broadband communication network have greatly expanded. Services will require that the subscriber be able to return information to the headend. In order to aid in the comparison of frequency division multiplexed broadband cable communications systems and space division multiplexed systems, computer programs have been developed which simulate the design of distribution networks for these two types of systems. The programs utilize a symmetric, repetitive, rectangular subscriber grid and perform an actual design for this grid, using available hardware and realistic design constraints. Equipment and installation costs are then computed by the programs, as well as the total cost of the system per subscriber, assuming that all customers passed by the cable route become subscribers.
