Evaluation of Criteria for Determining Limiting Nutrients in Surface Waters.

Different test procedures effectiveness in describing limiting nitrogen and phosphorus conditions were evaluated. Limiting values for these tests and procedures were recommended,which may be followed to determine if nitrogen or phosphorus is limiting plant growth in surface waters. Rooted aquatic plants and algea were tested for their NH4(+)-N absorption rate,alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity,extractable surplus phosphorus content ,and nitrogen and phosphorus tissue content. Surface and sediment interstitial waters and sediments were tested for nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. (Modified author abstract)
