Development of a Left Ventricle-to-Aorta Assist Device.

A new left ventricular assist pump,designated Model X LVAD,has been developed. In vitro performance tests have been conducted and the device has been implanted in twelve calves with in vivo study durations up to 159days. The pump has demonstrated satisfactory performance. An implantable electric-hydraulic power system for use with the Model X LVAD has been developed and tested. Eight in vivo studies were conducted;these studies ranged in duration from one to thirty-two days. During catheterization it was shown that left ventricular pressure could be lowered and maintained below 20mm Hg.
