Cochleate Vesicle, a Highly Specialized Device for Sperm Transfer in Male Sciomyzid Flies

The sperm pump in 23 species of Ethiopian, Oriental, and Australasian species of Sepedon is a non-musculated, sclerotized, cochleate structure, probably activated hydrostatically. It is termed the 'cochleate vesicle,' and is considered an apomorphic feature in the phylogeny of the family, indicating interspecific relationship.
