Treatability Studies of Textile-Domestic Waste Mixtures in a Completely-Mixed Bench Reactor.

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine qualitative and quantitative treatability information on highly alkaline mixtures of textile and domestic waste without pH adjustment. Mixture ratios,detention time,and rate of solids recycle were the variable parameters employed. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were reduced significantly for various mixture ratios ranging from 10percent textile - 90percent domestic to 50percent textile - 50percent domestic for all detention times in excess of three hours. Settling characteristics of the biological solids were good for nine of the ten waste mixtures tested. The one waste mixture that produced poor settling biological solids contained a high concentration of sulfur dye waste. Microscopic examination of the poor settling biological solids revealed a high concentration of filamentous microorganisms. These were identified to be Sphaerotilus and Thiothrix,and it was thought that their presence in high concentration was the cause of poor settleability. The kinetic coefficients were determined for three textile-domestic waste mixtures which employed textile waste from a single uniform batch.
