Energy Consumption in a large integrated steelworks is described. Large quantities of energy are lost in the form of high-temperature thermal effluents,even from plants where waste heat recovery is already practiced. A short survey of traditional designs of ceramic and metallic recuperators highlights performance limitations of existing plant. The development of a new design of ceramic recuperator for operating with waste gas temperatures of up to 1300C is described. The development program,is briefly mentioned referring to theoretical computer model studies and the testing of components. The design of a prototype ceramic recuperator for an oil-fired soaking pit is described and preliminary results given. Potential applications are discussed.
