Theoretical calculations are presented concerning fluid flow,rock response,heat transfer,and crack formation which occur when a heated rock target is struck by a high-speed water jet. Both the steady (continuous jet) and unsteady (water cannon) cases are treated over a range of jet velocities from zero to three kilometers per second. A model for the development of intergranular cracks due to both thermal and mechanical loads is developed and employed in the calculations. The results indicate that preheating the rock reduces jet pressure requirements for fragmentation in a dramatic way.
