Characterization and Evaluation of Springy Polypropylene as a Prosthetic Device.

Springy polypropylene (SPP) is a material which mechanically imitates many of the cardiovascular system components much more closely than polymers now in use. SPP has been extensively mechanically characterized in both the dry and wet states, e.g.,after conditioning in various simulated physiologic media for periods of over one year. In addition,mechanical testing after repetitive steam sterilizations and crimping operations have been performed. No adverse effects are caused by any of the conditioning treatments. Comprehensive in vivo and in vitro testing has provided strong evidence of the tissue compatibility of SPP.
