Technologies are examined which are available or anticipated for the petroleum refining industry (SIC 2911) to meet water pollution abatement as required by the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (P.L. 92-500). Six levels of pollution abatement are reviewed including EOD (elimination of the discharge of pollutants) and levels promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for 1977 (BPCTCA or best practicable control technology currently available) and for 1983 (BATEA or best available technology economically achievable). Capital, operating and maintenance costs are given in 1973 dollars along with requirements for non-financial resources. Performance is stated in terms of resulting effluents.
