The report describes the progress made in the continuing development of a spring-decoupled pulsed solenoid actuator in driving a blood pump. The current MK16C actuator,which is coupled to a diaphragm pump,weighs 1.8kg. and occupies 740ml. The solenoid has a work output of 3.2 Joules/stroke and a minimum efficiency (at full gap) of 68%. Total system efficiencies in excess of 30% have been measured in vitro over a wide range of simulated hemodynamic conditions. The system operates at cardiac rates in synchronous counter pulsation with the left ventricle,control being responsive to inflow from the left ventricle. Evaluation,both in vitro and in vivo,has demonstrated excellent responsiveness to rapid dynamic changes in rate,pressure,and stroke volume,and its ability to successfully unload the left ventricle.
