摘要

This study is directed toward the development of materials and methods useful for removing metal-ion pollutants from water. Several modified graphites were prepared that had ion-exchange or chelating properties capable of removing Fe(+3),Ni(+2),Co(+2),Mg(+2),and Ca(+2) from water. The absorption capacities of these modified graphites are too low for economical use in water treatment. They are useful for analytical separations,however. Attempts at producing materials with higher absorption capacities were unsuccessful. Adjustment of pH and removal of some metal ions as the hydroxides by the electrogeneration of base appears to be a practical process for large-scale water treatment.
