摘要

A visit was made to the Seamco Sporting Goods facility for the purpose of determining whether to include this facility in a study of possible hazards resulting from exposure to benzene (71432) on the job. The facility employed about 350 persons, with 260 being involved in the production of small balls, inflated balls, bathing caps, and ball bladders. In April of 1974 the use of benzene at this facility was stopped. Prior to that time benzene had been used in a 50% benzene and 50% carbon-disulfide (75150) mixture to wash bags at the striking bag bench locations, at washing stations in a 12.5% benzene solution at the automatic valving machine, at a spray booth where 1 quart of benzene was added to 5 gallons of cement to spray cement the valves, as a solvent in formulation of rubber cement for squash ball cementing, as benzol (71432) added to rubber strips in the compounding room, and as benzol used to wash colostomy bags prior to cementing. The authors conclude that it was not feasible to conduct an environmental/epidemiological study at this facility.
