AOA Launches National Legal Services Effort

For the first time, a systematic national effort is taking shape to develop legal services specifically addressed to the needs of older persons. The primary thrust of this effort is 11 legal services Model Projects funded by the Administration on Aging in July, 1975. AoA's support for legal services for older persons addresses an important but long ignored need. In addition to the legal problems encountered by all citizens, the elderly face special legal problems in dealing with pensions, medical care, age discrimination, guardianship, involuntary commitment, nursing home care, and housing. They are often the main claimants for such governmental programs as Supplemental Security Income, social security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Consequently, the elderly need unique legal assistance.
