Shear-Induced Hemolysis:Materials,and Blood Composition.

Materials being evaluated for their tendency to cause hemolysis when contacting flowing blood are affixed to disks in a rotational shear device. Citrated human blood is sheared in a 1mm gap for 6000sec in contact with these materials,and sampled at intervals for hemolysis. The main focus was on silicone materials: Silastic in several forms (with and without silica) and glow-discharge polymers of hexamethyl disiloxane and tetramethyl disiloxane deposited onto various substrates. Results are also reported for a special segmented polyether urethane, perfluorobutyryl cellulose,and polyethylene.
