The Development and Evaluation of the Hollow Fiber Blood Oxygenator.

A blood oxygenator using blood flow in hollow fibers of gas permeable polymers has been developed and scaled up to adult size. Large numbers of units were supplied for animal testing. Extensive evaluation of thrombus formation was carried out. Units were supplied for a series of 23clinical trials. Oxygenator performance was excellent in all cases. A design utilizing blood flow around hollow fibers in a spiral wrapped mat has also been developed. Adult size units of this design were supplied for animal testing. Gas transfer performance was excellent (>50cc/min/sq M at rated flow). Blood trauma has not been evaluated.
