Evaluation of Nonthrombogenic Fluoropolymer Membranes in Blood Oxygenators.

摘要

A new, thromboresistant biomaterial,ethylcellulose perfluorobutyrate,was fabricated into membranes for use in blood oxygenators. Celgard microporous polypropylene was coated with a five-micron-layer,then wrapped into spiral wound membrane lungs. These were evaluated in 24hour extracorporeal perfusions using sheep,and demonstrated adequate oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rates. Studies utilizing chromium-51labeled platelets demonstrated very good preservation of circulating blood platelets,confirming the blood compatibility of this biomaterial. Other studies were performed relating to purity,elemental composition,molecular weight distribution,gas permeabilities,and hydrolytic stability of the polymer. Results of thromboresistance and biological toxicity tests were also described.
