The document summarizes the development of two short-term left ventricular assist systems by Thermo Electron Corporation. An abdominally positioned Model VII ALVAD is being prepared for use at the Texas Heart Institute and an extracorporeal Model X LVAD for use by Children's Hospital Medical Center. Each system is described in terms of design details and performance capabilities. Paracorporeal pump implantations conducted at CHMC are described and the status of homograft valves used in the Model X LVAD is discussed. The current development of a clinical protocol is also outlined. A discussion of the THI effort describes the management and details of chronic reliability studies with the Model VII ALVAD. A patient acceptability survey has been conducted and a tentative clinical protocol is also presented.
