Combustion of Fuel Oil-Water Emulsions for Heating Buildings,

An existing household oil-fired hot-air furnace was modified to burn fuel oil-water emulsion. The modification consists of placing a small inexpensive emulsification device (0.175by 0.750inch) in the fuel line of the burner and adding an oil-water metering device. Although the operating cycle and controls of the furnace were not optimized,by using the emulsion instead of regular fuel oil for heating a laboratory building over a one week period, a fuel saving was realized of approximately 13percent,and a maximum of about 25% for a period of two days.
