This two-volume publication contains notes based upon a nine-week colloquium held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The program consisted of lectures and seminars on weather forecasting and weather forecasts and focused on four topics: (1) The fundamentals of large-scale numerical weather prediction; (2) initial data and related practical aspects of weather forecasting; (3) statistical-numerical weather forecasting,including the translation of the output of numerical models into weather forecasts;and (4) the economic and social impact of weather forecasts.
