A Review of the Effects of Dietary Iodine on Certain Thyroid Disorders,

Food survey data for 1974and 1975suggested that levels of iodine in foods consumed by Americans of all ages had increased since 1970and were found in some instances to be 10-fold in excess of the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances. This report reviews the possible associations between the elevated dietary iodine levels and the incidence of various thyroid disorders. The report concludes that a cause and effect relationship between increasing levels of dietary iodine and occurrence of Hashimoto's disease,iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis,iodine goiter,and thyroid cancer in the United States is not supported by data currently available. The report identifies several areas for future research and suggests a continuing need for clinical awareness and periodic surveys of thyroid disorders as well as monitoring of dietary iodine levels.
