Buckingham Lake is a small, man-made lake located within a major residential area of the City of Albany, New York. The lake, whose major water input is from storm-sewer runoff, was gradually being filled by the accumulation of organic debris and clayey silt over most of the bottom. The lake was also highly eutrophic with extensive surface aquatic plant growth a distinguishing feature of its tropic state. The lake was drained and the accumulated silt and muck was removed by excavation. The lake was refilled with City of Albany drinking water. Post-restoration monitoring of the lake's chemical, physical and biological characteristics showed that the eutrophic state of the lake was not reduced substantially by the removal of the accumulated sediment. The continued discharge of storm water, with high sediment loadings, is undoubtedly a major cause of the current eutrophic state of the lake.
