Fast Response CO/SF6Pulmonary Function Analyzer for Continuous Diffusion Capacity Measurement.

The pulmonary diffusion capacity analyzer which is the subject of this report operates on a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) principle and provides -from a single breath of sample gas - a continuous profile of absorption. Carbon monoxide is the sample,and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is the inert dilution reference. The two gases are continuously measured as the expired breath passes through the single sample cell. In the 1974-1975period,the prototype analyzer (designed and bread-boarded in the previous year) was completed,and thorough system characterization was carried out. Then,clinical testing was initiated in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California. Preliminary results of this testing and their contribution to further development are presented.
