Using a Nutrition Clinic's Waiting Room for Patient Education

The Outpatient Department Nutrition Clinic at the University of Virginia Hospital has instituted a program to provide patient education in the clinic's waiting room. The clinic serves an indigent population with the help of staff members and various groups of volunteers, and shows educational films, teaches patients craft skills, invites guest speakers to the clinic, presents cooking demonstrations, operates a Swap Shop for used clothes and household goods, displays easy-to-make household items, initiates poster campaigns throughout the hospital on nutrition issues, and provides free handouts of materials produced by various commercial companies.
