A Tolerance Box for MIG Fillet Welding Process Parameters

There is a large number of data concerning MIG welding parameters reported in the literature (Czesany 1976, Probst et al 1976, Welding Institute 1975, Vestama 1975). However, the measuring conditions or the weld quality features have generally not been reported in enough depth. In addition the data are not sufficient for fully controlling the weld bead shape, size and penetration. It is difficult to measure these variables during welding, and the knowledge about their dependence on other parameters like arc voltage, welding current, traverse rate, wire feed rate, and electrode stickout or contact tip to work distance would be useful in developing automatic control for MIG welding equipment. A systematic search for 'tolerance boxes' of welding parameters that give acceptable fillet welds has been initiated. This survey includes also an evaluation on surface shape and cross section of the weld bead. This report deals with horizontal fillet welds on 10 mm mild steel plates.
