This report contains a study conducted in 1964 which analyzed the chemical, forest products, and agricultural industries of Calcasieu Parish, La., and recommendations for growth in these industries. An overview of these industries is included, focusing on their present status and evaluating the changes in light of the 1964 report's recommendations and predictions of future trends. Research work was conducted by experts in the various fields of study most closely related to these industries. Some of the major conclusions include: (1) the condition of the chemical industry mirrors that of the industry nationwide -- generally favorable although supplies of petroleum and natural gas will remain a problem; (2) more forest lands are owned by large corporations in 1973 than at the time of the 1964 report, and most forest products resources are being utilized; (3) overall prospects for the forest industry appear favorable, particularly in the South; (4) the future of the rice industry is in doubt due to changes in rice acreage controls and low yields combined with high production costs in Southwest Louisiana; (5) soybean production is soaring, up 25 percent since 1974, although increased imports of palm oil could threaten the industry; (6) there is a possibility of both winter wheat and grain sorghum emerging as significant crops in the area; and (7) the farmer, to remain successful, must become more aggressive and knowledgeable in the management of farm production and marketing.
