Development of a Fluoride Releasing System for Prolonged Oral Use.

Fluoride ion release from a polymer matrix was obtained at rates ranging from 1.0to 0.02mg. of fluoride per day. The rate was a function of the thickness and composition of the rate limiting membrane. Poly(methyl methacrylate) was the membrane of choice. The matrix polymer was made from methyl methacrylate modified with a hydrophilic monomer such as 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate. A Howley orthodontic retainer appliance,which was fabricated from a candidate composition released a constant 1.0mg/day over the 98day test period. The amount of sodium fluoride contained in the appliance was sufficient for six months and was not considered toxic even if totally ingested all at once.
