A rapid assessment study to determine the toxicity and bioaccumulation of three chlorinated cyclodiene insecticide intermediates; hexachlorocyclopentadiene, hexachloronorbornadiene,and heptachloronorbornene to fathead minnow larvae and early juveniles was conducted for 30days under flow-through conditions. A concentration of 7.3micrograms/liter of hexachlorocyclopentadiene caused significant decreases in survival after 4days. Growth of fish exposed for 30days was not significantly decreased at any of the concentrations tested. The highest concentration of hexachlorocyclopentadiene having no adverse effect was 3.7micrograms/liter. Concentrations of 122and 226micrograms/liter of hexachloronorbornadiene caused significant decreases in survival after 4days. Growth of 30day-old larvae was significantly decreased at 38.4micrograms/liter and was the most sensitive indicator of toxicity. Survival of fathead minnows exposed to heptachloronorbornene was significantly decreased at 83.5micrograms/liter after 4days. The highest concentration having no adverse effect was 25.9micrograms/liter. The average bioconcentration factor for fish exposed to less than 40micrograms/liter of this compound in water was 11,200.
