摘要

Instrumentation and techniques for monitoring arteriosclerotic conditions in rabbits, monkeys, and humans by photographic and spectrophotometric analysis of the vessels of the ocular fundus were developed and tested. The following specific signs of arteriosclerotic conditions in monkeys and in humans were detected and monitored: (1) vessel tortuosity, (2) vessel caliber irregularity, (3) artery-vein nicking, (4) increased specular reflection from vessels, (5) exudates in the retina. Monkeys in which arteriosclerotic and hypertensive conditions were induced were used in a serial study. The monkey fundus was found to be an especially good model of the human fundus for arteriosclerotic conditions. Studies on human subjects provided experience in the clinical application of the specialized instrumentation in addition to a reference base with which to compare the results of the rabbit and monkey studies. The instrumentation functioned quite well.
