Survey for N-Nitroso Compounds at Synthetic Rubber and Latex Plant, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio, March 24, 1978

An on site visit was made to the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company located in Akron, Ohio for the purpose of determining worker exposure to N-nitroso compounds, particularly with regard to airborne volatile nitrosamines in the rubber industry. The facility produced synthetic latex as its major product and employed about 240 workers, divided among three shifts. The facility manufactured the following latices: butadiene-styrene copolymer, polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine terpolymer, and butadiene-styrene-carboxylic-acid terpolymer. Five bulk samples and five area air samples were tested for N-nitroso compounds. N-Nitroso compounds were not detected in the bulk or the air samples. The detection limit for the bulk sample was 0.1 micrograms/gram and the limit for the air sample was 0.05 micrograms/cubic meter.
