Some Observations on the Human Visual Perception System and Their Relevance to Computer Vision Research,

摘要

The paper presents a number of observations concerning the properties of the human visual perception system considered to be of relevance in designing computer vision systems. This material includes analysis of the sources of puzzlement and ambiguity of a number of well known optical illusions as well as descriptions and interpretations of psychological experiments which explore particular facets of the visual system organization. Comments and reflections relating the material to computer vision concept and implementation issues are made throughout. The presentation ends with a brief look at a far from resolved controversy concerning the means by which we interpret what we see;the resolution to this issue is crucial to the future development of computer vision research. An extensive bibliography is provided.
