National Engineering Handbook, Section 8. Engineering Geology

The purpose of this section of the engineering handbook is to present information on equipment, tools, exploration and sampling techniques, and criteria for conducting adequate investigations of damsites. It will also serve as a useful tool for training purposes, and to promote establishment of uniform standards and procedures for geologic investigations of damsites. Several factors necessary to satisfy design and construction requirements of a dam are discussed. Earth materials as an embankment are stressed. Emphasis is placed on particle characteristics, mass characteristics, and stratigraphic properties of embankment materials. The Unified Soil Classification System is examined. Classification of structure sites and minimum requirements for geologic investigations are presented.
