Emergency Exit Window Research Project

This study was designed to determine the suitability of a vertical operating window to serve as an emergency exit window (egress window) in accordance with the requirements set forth in Section 280.404 of the Federal Mobile Home Construction and Safety Standard. The specific purpose of the study was to obtain comparative data on the performance of vertical operating egress windows before and after installation by the mobile home manufacturer. The project involved testing only the vertically operating egress windows. No horizontal sliders or any other types of windows were included. Further, not more than one series of single-hung egress windows having a compensating balance system was to be tested in each State where testing was performed without prior HUD approval. Analyzing the data or making any conclusion from the data was not part of the study. The only commentary provided in the report pertains to the conditions of testing or any deviations from the established test procedure. To identify the general conditions of the windows being tested for conformance to section 280.403 of the Federal Mobile Home Construction and Safety Standard, some of the windows in the test program were evaluated for the air leakage, water penetration, and structural perfomance criteria of that section. Appendices contain the operations manual, a list of participating mobile home manufacturers, a photographic record, and data sheets.
