摘要

Nearly 1500 residents (located at 8 sites) of innovative, industrialized (prefabricated) housing built in the Government demonstration program Operation Breakthrough (OBT) comment on their housing experiences. Responses showed that residents clearly liked their housing despite its being factory built. Low cost was the first attraction to OBT housing, followed by convenience to schools. Although not an important attraction factor at the outset, neighbors were the most liked or disliked feature of living at BREAKTHROUGH developments. Only about 10 percent of OBT respondents voiced dissatisfaction with the dwelling unit itself, and dislike for dwelling features generally were site specific. Satisfaction centered on unit interior appearance and its design and layout. Quality and workmanship were of some concern, particularly relating to water and air leakages, inefficient heating systems, and insufficient insulation. When asked about the kitchen and bathroom specifically, respondents tended to be favorable toward the kitchen layout and appliances, but felt the bathrooms were small and uninteresting, meeting minimum requirments but providing no attractive features. Recreation amenities at the sites were greatly appreciated and regarded as key contributors to improving the development in the future. Residents reported some noise problems in the housing, but did not rank them as serious. Sufficient parking spaces were a concern among many residents, as was convenient parking in well-lit, guarded lots. Security in general was a concern of some residents but not for respondents as a whole. A common complaint against management was insufficient attention to maintenance. Overall, OBT residents liked their homes at least as much if not better than 551 residents of conventional, nonindustrialized housing who were surveyed in four of the OBT cities at the same time. Interview sites were St. Louis, Memphis, Seattle, Sacramento, Kalamazoo, Mich., Indianapolis, Macon, Georgia, King County, Washington. Tabular data are provided.
