Survey for N-Nitroso Compounds at Bostonian Shoes, Division of Gulf and Western, Lewiston, Maine

The prevalence of N-nitroso compounds at a shoe manufacturing facility was studied. Air samples, process water samples and rubber sole stock samples were taken around the facility and analyzed for N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759). At a detection limit of 0.2 micrograms per gram (microgram/g) there were no gas chromatography thermal energy analyzer (GCTEA) responsive compounds in the bulk rubber sole materials tested. At a detection limit of 0.91 microgram/g there were no GCTEA responsive compounds in any of the air samples. At a detection limit of 0.001 microgram/g the 2 samples of leather soak water contained 9.6 and 4.3 parts per billion of N-nitrosodimethylamine. The authors conclude that these levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine are comparable to what is usually found in bacon and probably are of no real concern.
