Evaluation of Rechargeable Batteries Used in Industrial Hygiene Equipment

The performance of rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries used in industrial hygiene equipment was evaluated. The batteries were cycled continuously; measurement intervals varied according to the length of a cycle and the batteries were discharged at constant current loads. Battery efficiency declined if the charge rate exceeded three times the accepted standard. The standard charge rate was 50 milliamps. All the batteries at 3 times normal discharge rates failed completely. At 40 degrees C half of the batteries failed. Optimum conditions for batteries suitable for an 8 hour discharge period of 500 cycles or more were at 33 percent discharge rate, at nominal or high charge rates, at nominal or low depth of discharge and were at ambient or low temperatures. Recommended criteria for determining the design of industrial hygiene equipment for use with these batteries are included.
