The report is a discussion of the history of the Patowmack Company, its canal, and the town of Matildaville. In the sections of the report which deal with the canal, an effort was made to place it within a broader historical context as well as to discuss its individual history. In the case of Matildaville, the quality of the historical data available was discussed at some length because it was not sufficient for a traditional narrative treatment of the history.
