Recommended Research Programs in Engineering Psychology

Programs representing areas of research needs in engineering psychology are reviewed. The development of systems employing advanced technology frequently isolates technologists in design and conceptualization aspects to the exclusion of representatives of user groups who are skilled specialists in defining user requirements to both needs and available technology. In fulfilling the latter role, engineering psychologists can employ the full range of knowledge of human capacities and limitations and operate at the forefront of human performance technology in terms of models, theories, and methods. Engineering psychology can be applied to benefit individual workers and national production systems in the following areas: supervisory control and monitoring; information systems and office environments; productivity of programming operations; measuring and predicting human workload; applied physical anthropology; human factors input to the design process; and design of static and dynamic displays.
