Adhesives and Procedures for Bonding Elastomers to Steel and Concrete

A study has been conducted on the effects of both solvent and nonsolvent based polyurethane mixtures and modified epoxy compounds as adhesives for the bonding of vulcanized elastomeric materials to both concrete and steel surfaces. It was found that epoxy compounds upon curing produced the strongest and best weather resistant bonds. However, the vulcanized Neoprene elastomer used required a cyclization process to give bonds of sufficient strength to be considered as adequate for field use. Although solvent based adhesives produced sufficient strength for some applications, voids formed in the adhesive interface would contribute to early failure of the bond between concrete and/or steel. A method was developed for the cyclization of commercial elastomers for shop and field use. Provisions have also been developed for qualifying various epoxy adhesives for use with cyclized elastomers so that superior adhesive bonds can now be obtained for both field and shop applications.
