Evaluation of Multicomponent Organic Solvent Samples Generated by Syringe Pump Method

The organic solvent mixtures quality control samples, generated by the syringe pump method, are evaluated by collaborative testing. The testing shows that the syringe pump method is adequate to generate uniform trichloroethylene and chloroform organic solvent mixtures. The range of coefficients of variation of sample-to-sample variation is about 1% to 3%. The interlaboratory error contributes the largest part of total experimental error and the range of coefficients of variation varies from 4% to 10% without desorption factor correction, and 6% to 11% with desorption factor correction of the raw data. Although the inaccurate determination of desorption factor by individual laboratories causes an increase in interlaboratory error in comparison with the case without desorption correction, it only increases 1% to 3%. It is concluded that interlaboratory error in the present study is largely due to errors in standard calibration curve determination, instrument calibration, and sample handling preparation.
