The Adequacy of Unemployment Insurance Benefits: An Analysis of Adjustments Undertaken through Thirteen and Twenty-Five Weeks of Unemployment

The purpose of this report was to analyze the adjustments undertaken by unemployment insurance beneficiary households during periods of compensated unemployment. A statewide random sample of Arizona beneficiaries who had received payment for the fifth consecutive week of unemployment benefits was selected over a one-year period during 1975-6. Follow-up interviews on those sample beneficiaries receiving checks for their thirteenth and twenty-fifth consecutive weeks of compensated unemployment showed that about two-thirds of the beneficiaries surveyed at each period reduced their necessary and obligated expenses from the employed month to month prior to the interviews. The principal sources of cash to help meet household expenses were savings loans and sale of personal property.
