Improved Fire Protection for Stationary Underground Equipment.

A survey of previous underground mine fires revealed a number of reported fires may have been caused by malfunctioning stationary electrical equipment. Therefore,an evaluation of conventional fire protection systems was conducted to determine their usefulness in the protection of this equipment. To simplify the problem and facilitate the handling of data,the underground mine was divided into nine work areas. Representative combustibles and associated hazards characteristic of each area were identified. Conventionally available fire protection systems were then examined and evaluated to determine engineering and cost feasibility,effectiveness and reliability for the development of fire protection guidelines which could be used within the nine areas of interest.
