The National Science Foundation's Second Symposium on Research Applied to National Needs reflects the broad objectives of the RANN program,projects addressed to the relation between science and society,and the application of scientific and technological knowledge for socially useful purposes. The conference was organized to bring together a cross-section of research users,research providers,and policymakers concerned with research applications;to present representative examples of RANN projects on each of the major current and emerging themes of RANN activities;to offer a variety of settings in which to listen to,learn from,and discuss ideas and issues inherent in these projects;and to help strengthen an effective partnership of government,industry,labor,and universities in the application of science and technology to society's needs. Volume 1presents the plenary sessions and introductory materials,an overview of the symposium,and an appendix containing a list of speakers,special guests,attendees,films and exhibits.
