A Comparison of the Effects of Chelated and Non-Chelated Cadmium on the Specific Growth Rate of 'Selenastrum capricornutum'.

A modification of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Algal Assay Procedure was used to determine the effect of chelation on cadmium toxicity to Selenastrum capricornutum Printz. Specific growth rates and bioaccumulation were measured. No differences in growth rate compared to the controls occurred in cultures treated with 2to 20micrograms cadmium. No growth was observed in cultures treated with 0.2to 5.0mg/l cadmium. Bioaccumulation of 2to 20micrograms cadmium in 60ml cultures in five days was below the detection limit of flame atomic absorption for cadmium.
