Microbial Mutagenesis Testing of Substances: Compound Report: F76-004, Sodium meta-bisulfite

SRI International examined an FDA compound identified as F76-004. The compound was tested in the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay for induction of reverse mutation in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA1535, TA1537, TA1538, TA98, and TA100 and in Escherichia coli WP2 (uvrA). Each assay was performed in the presence and in the absence of a rat liver homogenate metabolic activation system. Toxicity, ranging from doses of 3.3 mg/plate to 10 mg/plate, was observed with TA100 and TA1535, with and without metabolic activation. With WP2, toxicity was observed at 10 mg/plate with metabolic activation. Compound F76-004 did not appear to be mutagenic in these assays.
