The project developed the specification for an overall hierarchy computer control system for a basic steel mill. It attempts to bring whole plant complexes under unified coordination and control,and to mechanize entire company operational supervision systems by utilizing a hierarchy of computers. The report considers also: (1) the effects of such systems on lower level supervisory functions and on personnel practices;and (2) the specifications and requirements for the computers themselves and for their associated software. The results obtained are presented,along with recommendations for future projects. Two appendices are included: (1) 'The Basic Steel Mill';and (2) 'A Preliminary Discussion of Potential Economic Benefits.'
