National Research Strategy for Neurological and Communicative Disorders. Volume 1. Executive Summary

The NINCDS has conducted a review and assessment of its current research strategies, program balance, and research activities in light of evolving public health needs and research opportunities. The review and assessment was carried out as a joint effort of the Institute, its National Advisory Council, program advisory committee, study panels composed of scientists, clinicians and public members. This has served as the basis for resetting long-range goals and in developing a National Research Strategy for the areas of neurological and communicative disorders. The NINCDS Council Working Group on Research Strategies established seven categorical disease-oriented panels and two cross-cutting task groups to cover the area of concern and held a Public Forum for input from lay voluntary groups. The result has been the publication of a main summary document, an executive summary, and separate panel reports on: (a) developmental neurological disorders; (b) inflammatory, demyelinating and degenerative diseases; (c) convulsive and neuromuscular disorders; (d) neurological aspects of behavior; (e) pain; (f) stroke, trauma, regeneration and neoplasms; (g) communicative disorders; (h) technical documents of the panel on developmental neurological disorders; (i) task force report on basic sciences; and (j) summary of proceedings and testimony from the public forum for the development of a National Research Strategy.
