摘要

Expansion of the United States electric power industry is addressed. The focus is on superconducting cables which are economically competitive and inherently capable of technical development of greater power transmission capability. Superconducting cables appear to have many advantages when considered in the context of system operation. Properly designed,superconductivity cables have favorable characteristics: (1) The critical length may be as long as several hundred miles; (2) the cable may be designed to achieve surge impedance loading; (3) heavy fault currents may be carried without tripping and the line will carry rated current immediately after; (4) extended overload currents may be carried for many hours;and (5) cable rating is not dependent on soil conditions. This examination of electric power is presented in the areas of growth prospects of the United States electric power industry;superconductivity;recent developments in power transmission cables;Brookhaven cable designs;system implications of high current cables;and DC power transmission.
